“All Your Exes” by Julia Michaels

Julia Michaels is the master of dropping songs whose titles are misleading – the old art of misdirection if you will. And such is sort of the case with this track (“All Your Exes”) also.
');var c=function(){cf.showAsyncAd(opts)};if(typeof window.cf !== 'undefined')c();else{cf_async=!0;var r=document.createElement("script"),s=document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0];r.async=!0;r.src="//";r.readyState?r.onreadystatechange=function(){if("loaded"==r.readyState||"complete"==r.readyState)r.onreadystatechange=null,c()}:r.onload=c;s.parentNode.insertBefore(r,s)}; })();Upon first reading its appellation, one may think that it centers on some type of beef the singer has with her boyfriend’s exes. And well, in a way that is kinda true. But more to the point is her feelings for said boyfriend.
Or put otherwise, this is actually a love song which may come off as a beef track. But the real beef isn’t really with the addressee’s ex-girlfriends. Rather it’s more with fate itself, as in Julia not having been the first one to meet him.
And some of us may be familiar with these types of romantic scenarios. You’re dating someone who you really, really dig. But you know, this person has been around the block quite a few times.
So that reality becomes like an unspoken factor in the relationship. For instance, when the homeys are around, they don’t speak about his past too freely for fear of mentioning a former conquest.
And even in the back of her mind, Julia would like to know exactly who and what he did before getting with her. But ultimately it’s not even about that. Indeed, going back to the idea of actually living through this type of a situation, it’s sorta like you want to know, but at the same time you don’t want to know.
Then even beyond that there is this jealousy – for lack of a better word – factor. That’s really what the singer means when she wishes all of her honeybun’s exes “dead”.
She “wants to kill all the memories” that he has of these ladies, wiping them from his mental existence. But as the singer herself is able to recognize, “who you loved is a part of who you are”. So ultimately the idea of erasing them just like that is more of a fantasy.
So again, all of this may read like hate, but it’s actually love. After all, obviously the vocalist doesn’t even know who her lover’s exes actually are. It’s more like she’s become so attached to him that she wants to be his “only girl” now, forever and even in a past that’s already been written.
');var c=function(){cf.showAsyncAd(opts)};if(typeof window.cf !== 'undefined')c();else{cf_async=!0;var r=document.createElement("script"),s=document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0];r.async=!0;r.src="//";r.readyState?r.onreadystatechange=function(){if("loaded"==r.readyState||"complete"==r.readyState)r.onreadystatechange=null,c()}:r.onload=c;s.parentNode.insertBefore(r,s)}; })();But the situation can obviously be rectified by her beau staying faithful to her, or at least he “f–king better be”, from now ’til henceforth.
Julia Michaels
This track may be featured on an upcoming Julia Michaels album, but as of its release date that has yet to be verified.
Indeed even up until this point, being professionally active since 2010, Michaels has yet to release a full-length album, even though she has quite a few EPs under her belt.
Instead she has established herself as a songwriter and has written songs for damn year every big-name pop artist out there.
This includes Selena Gomez for which, she has co-written a number of hits, including the below:
- Slow Down (2013)
- Revival (album, 2015)
- Bad Liar, 2017
- Rare (album, 2020)
- Dámelo To (2021).
And other singers whom she has written for include Kelly Clarkson and the following:
- Fifth Harmony
- Lady Gaga
- Demi Lovato
- Dua Lipa
- John Legend
- Pink
- Ed Sheeran
- Shakira
- Gwen Stefani
So of course Julia also co-wrote “All Your Exes”, doing so alongside JP Saxe, German, Stefan Johnson and Jordan K. Johnson.
The latter two also produced the track as part of a unit known as The Monster & Strangerz who, akin to Julia Michaels, appear to be all over the place. And German, a similarly-tenured artist in the game, also served as co-producer.
When did Julia Michaels release “All Your Exes”?
The official release date of “All Your Exes” was the 26th of March 2021. It was actually Julia’s first official single for the year 2021.
