Juan Toscano-Anderson's parent is his single mother, Patricia Toscano-Anderson. She worked to teach violence-prevention skills to juvenile offenders.

Her salary was insufficient to pay rent and have food on the table, so she took his father, Macario Toscano, 's support to sustain herself and her children.

Patricia Toscano brought up in an area known as the death zone, fretted that her four children would become sad statistics. Her younger brother, nephew, and two relatives were slain in East Oakland.

Growing up, Juan did not have a father figure's presence in his life. However, his maternal side's grandfather tried to shield his life.
