Art Alexakis is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, music video director, and actor who has a net worth of $2 million.

Alexakis is best known as the lead singer and guitarist for the rock band Everclear.

With Everclear, Art has released nine studio albums, including “World of Noise” (1993), “Sparkle and Fade” (1995), “So Much for the Afterglow” (1997), “Welcome to the Drama Club” (2006), and “Black Is the New Black” (2015), and the band is known for singles such as “Santa Monica,” “Everything to Everyone,” “I Will Buy You a New Life,” and “Wonderful.”

Alexakis has also written and produced tracks for other artists, launched his own record labels, and worked as an A&R rep for Capitol Records.

Early Life and Struggles

Art Alexakis was born in Los Angeles, California in 1962. His father left when he was five years old, and his mother moved the family to a housing project. Alexakis’ older brother died of a heroin overdose when he was twelve, and his girlfriend committed suicide soon after. He attempted suicide himself by jumping off a pier, but survived and later credited his brother’s voice and vision for saving him. Alexakis was physically and sexually abused by older kids in his neighborhood and began using drugs at the age of thirteen. He eventually became addicted to cocaine and heroin and overdosed on cocaine at age 22. He quit drugs in 1984 and later studied film at Los Angeles Community College.

Art Alexakis was in a Los Angeles-based band called Shakin’ Brave in the ’80s before moving to San Francisco and launching Shindig Records. He then formed the band Colorfinger, which released the EP “Demonstration” and the album “Deep in the Heart of the Beast in the Sun” in 1990. After forming Everclear in 1992, they released the EP “Nervous & Weird” and the album “World of Noise” in 1993. Their second album, 1995’s “Sparkle and Fade,” went Platinum and featured the hit singles “Santa Monica” and “Heartspark Dollarsign.” They followed with 1997’s “So Much for the Afterglow,” certified 2x Platinum, and several more successful albums. In 2019, Art released a solo album called “Sun Songs.”

Throughout his career, Art also produced albums for other artists, founded the label Popularity Recordings, and co-wrote and dueted with Marion Raven on the song “At the End of the Day.”

In 2022, Everclear embarked on their 30th Anniversary Tour, and Art expressed gratitude for his life and the opportunity to continue making music despite his MS diagnosis.

Art Alexakis’ Personal Life and Activism

Art Alexakis married Jenny Dodson in 1995 and had a daughter named Annabella Rose in 1993. After their divorce in 1999, he married Stephanie Greig from August 2000 to April 2004 and welcomed daughter Arizona Star with his then-fiancée Vanessa Crawford in 2007, whom he later married in 2009.

In a 2000 interview with “Spin,” Alexakis stated that he had become a Christian through his relationship with Greig. He later revealed that he used his spirituality to improve his life but did not impose it on others.

In March 2019, Alexakis announced that he had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He attributed the diagnosis to a car accident he was in three years prior, which led to an MRI that revealed lacerations and suspicious marks on his spinal cord.

Alexakis is an activist for child support enforcement and testified before the House of Representatives Sub-Committee in support of the Compassion for Children and Child Support Enforcement Act (HR 1488) in 2000. He also served as a delegate for the Democratic National Convention in 2004 and is a supporter of gay rights.

Accolades for Everclear

In 1996, Everclear was nominated for a Best Alternative Video MTV Video Music Award for their song “Santa Monica.” Two years later, the band earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for “El Distorto de Melodica.” That same year, Everclear won a “Billboard” Modern Rock Artist of the Year Award.

In 1996, Art Alexakis purchased a 5,519 square foot home in Portland for $600,000. He sold the property in 2002 for $1.265 million. The home was recently listed for sale in October 2020 with an asking price of $1.95 million. The listing highlighted the property’s famous former owner, Art Alexakis, who is considered one of Portland’s top musicians.
