Aster directed the short film “Beau” in 2011. Phoenix’s character would play a distraught but pleasant-looking man who has a troubling connection with his overbearing mother and never met his father.
According to the movie’s description, ‘a decades-spanning surrealist horror film set in an alternate present. When his mother passes away, he travels home, facing some terrifying supernatural dangers. ‘
With “Hereditary,” Aster’s brilliantly realized neo-horror picture, he grabbed attention at Sundance 2018.

Aster, the director of Midsommar, had previously said that his future film would be a four-hour “nightmare comedy” when it was formally presented in February 2021.
In an interview, Aster insisted that his upcoming film was not a horror film. I love horror, so I’m sure I’ll be back, he continued. “It might take me a few movies before I wind back around to horror,” he said.
He included a warning that head trauma will ALWAYS have a place in my films.
It read,‘Before trial, the Taylor Swift Shake It Off lawsuit was resolved: What you should know.’
The movie also stars Amy Ryan, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Nathan Lane, Parker Posey, and Patti LuPone, in addition to Joaquin Phoenix.
In October 2021, according to Henderson, the movie’s production was finished.
‘Joaquin and Ari were very compatible, and they collaborated throughout the entire movie. They had been working for a while when I arrived, which was quite close to the finish of the shoot. Additionally, the way they collaborated felt like they were longtime friends. It seems like they could get angry and reconcile in a matter of seconds.’
However, the work was continuously improved as a result, according to Henderson.
This is Aster’s third picture to be released through A24 after Midsommar and Hereditary.
Aster and Pawel Pogorzelski, who worked together on Midsommar and Hereditary, collaborate once more on Beau Is Afraid. They first met while they were both students at the AFI Conservatory.
Phoenix, who played Arthur Fleck in Joker: Folie à Deux, will return to the role for Beau Is Afraid alongside Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn.
Phoenix, an Academy Award winner, will also play the renowned French leader in Ridley Scott’s Napoleon.
The movie will examine Napoleon’s marriage to Josephine, who Vanessa Kirby plays.
