Beeple, born Michael Joseph Winkelmann on June 20, 1981 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, is a digital artist. His mother worked at a senior center, while his father was an electrical engineer. Winkelmann attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, graduating in 2003 with a degree in computer science.

Beeple’s “Everydays” Project

In 2007, Beeple, whose real name is Mike Winkelmann, began his renowned “Everydays” project, which involves creating a unique piece of digital art every day.

The project has been ongoing for over 5,000 consecutive days and was inspired by Tom Judd, who drew a picture every day for a year.

Beeple has dedicated different years to individual media and programs, such as Adobe Illustrator in 2012 and Cinema 4D in 2015.

His work often focuses on dystopian futures and uses iconic figures from popular culture or politics to satirize current news.

Louis Vuitton utilized some of Beeple’s works in their Spring/Summer ready-to-wear collection in 2019.

Artist Beeple Sells NFTs for Millions

Artist Beeple began selling non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on Nifty Gateway in November 2020. One of his NFTs, “Crossroad,” sold for $6.7 million in February 2021 after originally being sold for $66,666.66.

Later in 2021, Beeple auctioned off an NFT titled “Everydays: the First 5000 Days” at Christie’s in London, which sold for a staggering $69.3 million. It became the most expensive NFT ever sold and the first to be sold by a legacy auction house. The buyer, programmer Vignesh Sundaresan, paid for the artwork using cryptocurrency and has displayed it in a digital museum.

Winkelmann’s Other Mediums of Practice

Along with his digital art, Winkelmann also works in various other mediums including short films, creative commons VJ loops, and virtual and augmented reality projects. He has created concert visuals for notable artists such as Katy Perry, Eminem, and Imagine Dragons, while also working with corporate clients like Apple, Samsung, and Coca-Cola.

His impressive client list also includes NBC, Nike, Sony Pictures, and even Space X. Winkelmann’s versatility and range in his work have solidified his position as a prominent figure in the digital art world.

Winkelmann’s Move to North Charleston

Winkelmann relocated from Wisconsin to North Charleston, South Carolina in 2017. He shares a home with his wife and two children in the new city.
