Chumbawamba’s classic hit “Tubthumping” is filled to the brim with inspirational texts. Throughout the song’s very catchy chorus, the narrator talks about getting knocked down multiple times but getting up again and again each time. And he tells the person or entity doing this to him that they are wasting their time because they are never going to succeed in keeping him down. Now who this person or people are, the listener is never made aware of. And that’s because the narrator never makes that clear.

Boff Whalley talks about “Tumbthumping”

Speaking to The Guardian, Boff Whalley (Chumbawamba’s lead guitarist), confirmed the above. According to him, the song was inspired by an Irish neighbor of theirs. This neighbor would often return home completely drunk and would fall over while trying to get into his house.

However, he apparently would get up again and not give up on his quest to get into the house. And that’s likely where the band got the inspiration for the line: “I get knocked down but I get up again…“.

Owing to the above, it is so clear that this same neighbor is the one the narrators are talking about throughout the song when they say he drinks all manners of alcoholic beverages and sings songs that remind him of both the good and bad times.

A song about resilience

Despite the comical event that inspired the song, it is a really meaningful and inspirational tune. According to Whalley the song is about “the resilience of ordinary people”.

Meaning of “Tubthumping”

But with that being said, what really is the meaning of “Tubthumping”?

“Tub-thump”, which is a verb, is actually an informal word. It refers to expressing or voicing out one’s views in a wild and noisy manner.

The word “tub-thumping” can also be an adjective. And as an adjective, it is used to describe a noun (person or entity) doing something in a violent or wild manner. In this case, it is always placed before the noun it is describing. Examples:

• John is such a tub-thumping protester.
• She’s using a tub-thumping attempt to combat global warming.

Meaning of “Pissin’ the night away”

In British slang, the phrase “getting pissed” means getting totally drunk. “Pissin’ the night away” is therefore tantamount to wasting the night drinking and having fun.

Writing and Release Date of “Tubthumping”

The members of Chumbawamba are the song’s official songwriters. The band is also credited with the song’s production.

“Tubthumping” came out in August of 1997 as part of Chumbawamba’s “Tubthumper” album. Actually it was one of the first of the three singles the album spawned.

A mega hit!

This classic went on to become the band’s biggest international hit. It made its debut at position number 2 on the UK Singles Chart. And having debut at number 79 in America (the Billboard Hot 100), it later rose all the way to number 6. Furthermore it went on to peak at number 1 in at least half a dozen countries around the world, including Canada.

The song was so successful that as of 2017, it had sold almost a million copies in Britain alone. Furthermore, it was honored with a Brit Award nomination in 1998.
