SUWON, South Korea (CNN) -- Brazil underlined why they are the new World Cup favourites with a scintillating display to hammer Costa Rica 5-2.

Both teams played their part in a richly entertaining game before a colourful crowd under the Suwon sun.

Costa Rica at times ran Brazil's defence ragged but their defeat, coupled with Turkey's win over China in the other Group C game, means Brazil and Turkey go through to the next 16. (China v Turkey report)

Having already qualified for the knockout stage, Brazil were relaxed and at times indulged in showboating. And with both teams committed to attack it was always going to be a treat.

Luis Marin set Brazil on their way after 10 minutes, deflecting the ball past his own keeper Erick Lonnis as he tried to defend a cross.

Ronaldo's scuffed shot crept inside the near post for the second three minutes later then Edmilson scored a spectacular third with an overhead volley. The centreback started the move and finished with the skill of a centreforward.

Paulo Wanchope pulled one back for Costa Rica before half-time then Ronald Gomez made it 3-2 early in the second half.

Roared on by the crowd, Costa Rica pressed for an unlikely equaliser. But they were stunned by two more Brazil goals in three minutes. Rivaldo turned in a cross for the fourth and Junior ran through to crack in the fifth.

Brazil have now scored 11 goals in the tournament.
