CNN PREVIEW

In March, Future Cities looks to the sky of the Italian capital, Rome.

The programme finds out how the city is re-inventing itself for the 21st century as the construction of an eye-catching sky-scraper, the Euro-sky Tower, is set to emerge out of the ancient ruins in Rome's business district. Many of Rome's residents are less than thrilled with the prospect of this "eco-monster", worried it will not fit in with the city's historic architecture and argue that there is no need for high-rises in Rome given the vast areas of land on the outskirts. Future Cities will be speaking to those for and against plus the Vatican.

Italy is known for having the highest number of cars per capita in the world. This has become problematic, as its historical centre becomes permanently congested. A solution isn't clear as Rome sits on top of thousands of years of ancient archaeology, prompting many to suggest the only way out would be to look up. The programme investigates the city's infamous traffic problem and finds out how planning officials aim to fix the issue by expanding magnetic tram lines and implementing a 'car-sharing' programme.
