DeKalb fire at Wood Terrace Apartments forces 21-unit evacuation

Writer William Burgess

Fire officials made no mention of possible injuries.

ATLANTA — The Red Cross is now assisting several people following an apartment fire in DeKalb County on Saturday.

DeKalb Fire said they were called to Wood Terrace Circle on Saturday afternoon to find smoke and flames erupting from one side of the building. Following an examination of the building, firefighters took an attack line to the third floor to keep the fire from reaching the attic.

Other firefighters, meanwhile, put out an addition line on the second floor to contain the blaze. And a third was used to keep the fire under control on the first floor.

However, the crews had to take care not to hit the actual source of the flames with water since it was charged with electricity. Instead, they could only contain the flames until Georgia Power arrived. Their arrival allowed firefighters to fully extinguish the flames.

However, as a result of the fire, people living in 21 units at the apartment were forced out of their homes. The Red Cross said it is now in the process of meeting one-on-one with families and offering support.

While fire officials didn't release the exact cause of the fire, one photo shared from the department shows heavy damage to power meter boxes on the side of the building. Neither DeKalb Fire nor the Red Cross makes mention of any injuries in the blaze.
