Former Notre Dame RB Logan Diggs transfers to LSU: How he fits with Tigers’ backfield
Jessica Cortez
Former Notre Dame running back Logan Diggs will transfer to LSU, he announced on social media Tuesday. Here’s what you need to know:
- Diggs led Notre Dame with 165 carries as a sophomore last season. He totaled 820 yards rushing with four touchdowns in 2022.
- The Boutte, La., native has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
- Diggs entered the transfer portal on April 27. “This has been the hardest decision of my life,” he said at the time, “but I know with faith and belief all things are possible.”
- LSU finished 10-4 last season, winning the Citrus Bowl with a dominant 63-7 victory over Purdue.

The Athletic’s instant analysis:
How LSU’s backfield now looks
Diggs joins a very deep and experienced LSU running back room but without one clear star. Josh Williams had a fantastic year in 2022, becoming the starting three-down back and averaging more than five yards per carry while being LSU’s best pass-protecting back, on top of Noah Cain, Armoni Goodwin and John Emery. But Diggs provides a potential star with the ability to provide both dynamic playmaking and overall production. LSU wasn’t in trouble at running back, but it just got one step closer to being a real title contender. — Miller

What did this loss mean for Notre Dame?
Diggs is Notre Dame’s biggest transfer loss of the offseason, both because of his talent and the room he left behind in South Bend. The Irish do bring back Audric Estime, who’d moved into an RB1 for Notre Dame last season, but Diggs was the clear No. 2 at a position where two (and sometimes three) need to be ready to play. That leaves sophomores Gi’Bran Payne and Jadarian Price as the next men up. However, Price is recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon with his rehab ongoing. Payne is coming off a red shirt.
The departures of Tyler Buchner (Alabama) and receiver/corner Lorenzo Styles (Ohio State) perhaps got more attention due to their positions, but neither comes close to Diggs in terms of actual college production. Diggs thought about flipping to LSU on national signing day two years ago and again last spring. The ultimate move home isn’t a shock, but it’s still a blow to Notre Dame’s roster as Diggs will now reunite with Brian Kelly in Baton Rouge. — Sampson
