What is George Lucas’ Net Worth

George Lucas, known for creating the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, has a net worth of $10 billion. He is a director, writer, producer, and businessman, and is the founder of Lucasfilm and Industrial Light and Magic. His creations have generated over $12 billion in global box office ticket sales, making him the richest celebrity in the world and the richest person in the entertainment industry.

Lucas has committed to the philanthropic “Giving Pledge,” promising to donate at least half of his wealth to charity by the time he dies or at his death.

George Lucas Sells Star Wars Franchise to Disney for $4 Billion

George Lucas sold the rights to the Star Wars franchise to Disney in 2012 for $4 billion in cash and stock. He received $2.21 billion in cash and 37 million shares of stock, which at the time was trading at around $50. This meant that he received $1.85 billion worth of Disney shares. With his share count and Disney’s semi-annual $0.88 dividend, Lucas earns around $64 million per year in dividend payments.

In March 2021, with Disney’s share price nearing $200, those 37 million shares had grown to be worth $7.4 billion.

Early Life and Career

George Lucas was born and raised in Modesto, California, on May 14, 1944. He initially had his eye on a career in racing cars, but after a potentially fatal accident in high school, his interests shifted considerably.

Lucas became enthusiastic about photography and film making during his time at Modesto Junior College, where he started small by filming car races and other footage. He eventually transferred to the University of Southern California where he befriended fellow filmmaker Steven Spielberg and won accolades during his postgraduate studies.

His 1967 student film, Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB, was eventually made into his 1971 premier full-length feature film, THX 1138. Though it was poorly received, the project led to a more successful venture in American Graffiti.

American Graffiti, made with a budget of $777,000, garnered five Academy Award nominations and grossed $115 million in domestic revenue alone, $140 million worldwide. It is considered one of the most profitable films in history.

Star Wars: A Global Phenomenon

With a budget of $11 million, George Lucas’ film Star Wars became a global phenomenon upon its release in 1977. The movie’s success led to two sequels in the early 1980s, which also performed well. Lucas later directed a prequel trilogy in the late 1990s and early 2000s. After selling the rights to Disney, a recent sequel trilogy and spinoff films and series were produced, contributing to the franchise’s worldwide revenue of over $12 billion.

George Lucas’ Film and Entertainment Career

Lucas directed six films and acted as producer, executive producer, and writer on several films. His successful films include “Body Heat,” “Labyrinth,” “The Land Before Time,” and the Indiana Jones franchise, which brought in nearly $2 billion at the box office.

Lucas also founded THX, Skywalker Sound, Industrial Light and Magic, and LucasArts as subdivisions of his parent company, Lucasfilm Ltd. These companies set new standards in filmmaking and gaming, developing new technologies for graphics and sound that enhance the audience experience.

Accolades and Honors

George Lucas has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career in film. In 2005, he was presented with The Lifetime Achievement Award from The American Film Institute. He has also been nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Directing and Writing for both American Graffiti and Star Wars. In 1991, he was honored with the Academy’s Irving G. Thalberg Award.

Lucas has been recognized for his contributions to science fiction as well. In 2006, he was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, only the second film, television, and media contributor after Spielberg. In 2013, he received the National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama, specifically for his contributions to American cinema.

Lucas has also been recognized by Disney, as he was inducted as a Disney Legend in August 2015. Later that same year, he was an honoree at the Kennedy Center Honors. As part of Hasbro’s “Star Wars: The Black Series,” an action figure of George Lucas as a stormtrooper was released in honor of Lucasfilm’s 50th anniversary in 2021.

George Lucas’ Wise Business Decision

George Lucas made a smart business move when negotiating his pay for the first Star Wars in 1973. Instead of accepting a nearly 300% pay raise, he offered to keep his salary at $150,000 in exchange for retaining all merchandising rights and the rights to any sequels. This turned out to be a bad deal for Fox but arguably the greatest film contract in history for George, as by 2012, Star Wars had earned $20 billion in merchandise sales and $4 billion in home entertainment sales.

On October 30th 2012, George Lucas sold his entire Lucasfilm company to Disney for $4.1 billion in cash and stock. He owned 100% of the company, meaning the entire $4 billion went into his pockets. Overnight, his net worth more than doubled from $3.3 billion to $7.3 billion.

Philanthropic Efforts and Donations

George Lucas has made significant philanthropic efforts throughout his career. In 2005, he donated $1 million to help fund the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. He and his wife Mellody Hobson donated $25 million to the nonprofit After School Matters in 2013. Lucas also donated between $501,000 and $1 million through the Lucas Family Foundation to the Obama Foundation in 2016.

Lucas plans to donate the majority of his net worth to charities focused on education. His foundation currently controls more than $1 billion and he has donated millions to other causes supporting cancer research and the Make-A-Wish foundation. He has also donated over $175 million to his alma mater, USC. Despite giving billions to charity, George Lucas remains the wealthiest celebrity on the planet.

Personal Life of George Lucas

From 1969 to 1983, Lucas was married to film editor Marcia Lou Griffin, with whom he adopted a daughter named Amanda Lucas in 1981. He went on to adopt two more children as a single parent, Katie Lucas in 1988, and Jett Lucas in 1993. All three of his children appeared in the Star Wars prequels. In the 1980s, Lucas dated singer Linda Ronstadt.

In 2013, Lucas married Mellody Hobson, the chair of DreamWorks Animation. They had been dating for seven years and were married at Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch. They welcomed their daughter via surrogate in the same year.

George Lucas Real Estate Portfolio

George Lucas’ largest real estate asset is the Skywalker Ranch, a nearly 6,000-acre property in Marin County, California. Lucas purchased the ranch in 1978 and has spent over $100 million turning it into a private home, movie studio, retreat, and screening theater for 300 people. The property also features a 50,000 square-foot private home, several pools, tennis courts, and more. Lucas has placed roughly 5,000 of the property’s acres into a perpetual conservation easement with the Marin County Agricultural Land Trust.

In 2017, Lucas purchased a 9,000 square-foot home in the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles for $33.9 million. In 2010, he spent $19.5 million on a beachfront home in Carpinteria, California, just south of Santa Barbara. He tore down the existing home and built a much larger Cape Cod-style house on the property. In December 2019, Lucas spent $28 million to buy the house next door, which had previously been owned by a woman named Frances Morehart who died in 2018 at the age of 93. His new combined beachfront footprint in Carpinteria is over 3-acres.
