Herbert Smith Obituary, Death – Herbert “Herb” L. Smith, Jr., 86, of Lake Placid, Florida, peacefully passed away on November 21, 2023. His daughter was present throughout his visit with him. In Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, a child was born to Herbert L. Smith, Sr. and Anna M. Smith (Cook) on June 8, 1937. His high school was in Hannibal, New York. Dade Jr. College, the University of Miami, Beaux Beauty School, SUNY Oswego, and SUNY Oswego all contributed to his BA in fine arts.
He became an Army soldier in 1960. Their June 1961 wedding ceremony was a testament to Herb’s soulmate, Elizabeth “Beth” A. Harrington. In his time as an Army soldier, he participated in numerous training exercises and classes. Serving as the battery commander at the Nike Hercules nuclear site just outside of Los Angeles, California, he was also a captain in Vietnam. That was before he was the S-3 officer range command at Texas’s Fort Bliss. He continued his career with the Army National Guard and became a major in 1976.
Herb continued his community work after leaving the US Army, first as director of civil defence for Martin County, Florida, and then for Wayne County, New York. Herb loved to sail, paint, play guitar, dance, visit family, go to church, and captivate people with his stories when he had free time. Not only did he live an interesting and eventful life, but his positive outlook, sociability, and humour made him famous as well.
John and Wayne Smith, Brenda Smith, Cherie and Bradford Snow, in-laws Francis, Dorothy, and Patricia Harrington, and his cherished wife of 37 years, Beth, all died before him. Moretta (Charles) Demm, Brenda Smith, John Smith, and Wayne Smith also went away.
Herbert Smith III (Carolyn) and Lecia Riccelli (James) are his offspring. After him come a plethora of nieces and nephews, grandkids Brennan and Sean Smith, in-laws Jean Smith and William and Francis (Rosanna) Harrington, and siblings Warren and William (Vicki) Smith.
