Loretta Lynn, prior to her involvement in country music, married Oliver Lynn, who was known as Doolittle Lynn (Biography, n.d.). Loretta and Oliver first met at a pie social and married in 1948, when Loretta was just 15 years old and Oliver was 21. They had six children together.
At age 19, Loretta became the mother of their first child, and she subsequently gave birth to three more children. They were married until Doolittle’s death in 1996.
Loretta often thanked Oliver for her music career, despite their problems. Oliver gave her the guitar she used to compose her first tunes, and he urged her to perform.
According to WBUR, she composed “I’m a Honky Tonk Girl,” her first-ever song, in only 20 minutes on that instrument. Oliver also served as his wife’s talent manager.
“Me and my husband both worked,” she explained. “I took care of a farmhouse, cleaned and cooked for 36 ranch hands before I started singing,” she says. “So singing was easy. I thought ‘Gee whiz, this is an easy job.’”
Despite Loretta Lynn’s husband helping her achieve success, their marriage was quite difficult. Loretta frequently described her husband’s alcoholic and promiscuous behavior in her writing.
Loretta Lynn’s Husband Oliver Lynn used to cheat on her
Oliver Lynn was not loyal to her wife Loretta Lynn. He was unable to remain faithful to his talented wife, and Loretta based many of her songs on her troubled relationship with him.
In addition to his drinking and his infidelity, he was also prone to becoming violent. However, Loretta regarded herself as ‘as vicious as a serpent.’
Loretta knew that Oliver was cheating on her, but she never wanted to leave him. Despite his lies, she loved him. “If you can’t fight for your man, he’s not worth having,” she said.
