Min Liao successfully ran the phone scam for almost three years, earning millions in the process.
However, his scheme was eventually discovered, and he got arrested in 2015. Min and Kelly's assets were frozen after his arrest as he was charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud or wire fraud.
Liao made an agreement with the IRS to cooperate, and in return, he was spared from serving time in prison. In the end, he was sentenced to two years of probation under supervised release.
Despite not serving jail time, Min still faced multiple financial problems. He was forced to sell many of his private assets, including a Bentley, Mercedes, jewelry, and his Beverly Hills house. According to Meaww.com, Liao paid $168 million to the government.
At the time of Min's arrest, the Chinese businessman and Kelly had separated but not legally divorced. In spite of their estranged relationship, Li helped her former husband during his trial and even paid the legal fees from her personal money.
