Writer Jessica Cortez

The issue of domestic violence continues to prevail globally, affecting individuals and families in various ways.

Sadly, even those responsible for safeguarding the community can become entangled in such tragic events.

In a turn of disturbing events, HPD Officer shoots wife and gets terminated.

Police officer Galib Chowdhury, 31, from the Houston Police Department (HPD), faced charges of shooting his wife early on Monday.

Authorities have detained him and suspended his employment.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:45 a.m. in a nearby apartment complex situated near Clay Road and Gessner Road.

Galib Chowdhury, a two-year employee of the department, used to oversee the Northwest Division.

Records indicate that the pair married a year ago.

During Monday afternoon, the police observed family members removing their belongings from the apartment and engaging in conversations with them at the scene.

In response to a distress call, the police arrived and found a 30-year-old woman who had suffered a gunshot wound to her face.

She was promptly transported to the hospital and underwent surgery.

Thankfully, her injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening, and a swift recovery is anticipated.

Immediate action & accountability on HPD Officer shoots wife

The HPD wasted no time in taking decisive action against Officer Galib Chowdhury.

Upon arrival at the scene, authorities arrested Chowdhury and relieved him of his duties.

HPD Chief Troy Finner has characterized the incident as a domestic violence case arising from an argument.

The Special Investigations Unit and Internal Affairs Division of the Houston Police Department are currently looking into the incident in great detail.

The authorities have not made the exact specifics of what happened before the shooting incident public.

Chief Finner confirmed that the department did not issue the weapon used, highlighting that HPD officers personally own their firearms.

Chowdhury currently faces charges of aggravated assault against a family member, resulting in significant physical harm.

Chief Finner shared his concerns, saying, “When you become a police officer and wear that badge, you’re expected to uphold the standards of the force at all times. While we acknowledge the legal process, there are specific details that greatly trouble us based on the information we currently have.”

The Chief reassured the public that the HPD would implement accountability measures and ensure that the department follows due process to address the matter.

Consequences of domestic violence

Officer Chowdhury’s case is a tragic reminder of the extensive repercussions of domestic violence.

Acknowledging that domestic violence knows no bounds, affecting individuals across all professions and socioeconomic statuses is crucial.

This incident has sparked crucial discussions regarding the urgent requirement for increased awareness, prevention, and assistance for domestic violence victims.

As per the Public Alliance Against Abusive Behavior at Home, north of 10 million ladies and men face abusive behavior at home every year in the US.

Considering this, HPD’s casualties’ administrations are encouraging individuals of Houston to recollect that help is open to those out of luck.

Lieutenant Julie Pleasants from HPD Victims Services emphasized the severity of domestic violence, stating, “It is an extremely violent crime, posing great danger even to our officers. To anyone currently listening, please be aware that if you find yourself in immediate danger, it is crucial to dial 911.”
