Early Life and Education

Jon Secada was born on October 4, 1961 in Havana, Cuba and given the name Juan Francisco Secada Remirez. His parents emigrated to Miami, Florida in 1971 where they opened a coffee shop. Secada attended Hialeah Senior High School where he discovered his musical talent during a performance of “A Christmas Carol” in 11th grade. He then pursued a career in music after being encouraged by his parents.

Secada attended the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami where he received a Bachelor of Music in 1983 and a Master of Music in jazz vocal performance in 1986. He graduated with cum-laude honors and was later induced into the Iron Arrow Honor Society, the highest honor bestowed upon a student by the University of Miami.

After becoming a teacher at Miami Dade College in 1986, Jon Secada was introduced to Emilio Estefan, who became his mentor and music manager. He released his self-titled debut album in 1992, which sold seven million copies followed by “Otra Dia Mas Sin Verte” in 1992 and “Heart, Soul & a Voice” in 1994.

During this time, he collaborated with other artists such as Frank Sinatra, Shanice, and Ricky Martin. He released several albums throughout the latter half of the 1990s, including “Amor,” “Secada,” and “Better Part of Me,” which won the 1996 Grammy Award in the Best Latin Pop Album category.

Secada returned to the stage in 2003 by performing in “Cabaret” and released the album “Same Dream” in 2005. He was also a judge on “Latin American Idol” from 2006 to 2009, during which he released a Christmas album called “A Christmas Fiesta” in 2007.

In 2017, he released a tribute album covering songs by Benny Moré, which won the Latin Grammy Award in the Best Traditional Tropical Album category.

Jon Secada, who was previously married to Jo Pat Cafro from 1988 to 1993, began dating Maritere Vilar in 1995. The couple tied the knot in 1997 and have two children together. They live in a large home in Coral Gables, Florida, close to the University of Miami, where Secada has created the Jon Secada Music Scholarship.

Aside from supporting music education, Secada has also raised funds for The Recording Academy’s “Keeping Music in Schools” initiative. He has shown his support for various other music and arts-related issues and has also been involved in philanthropic initiatives like the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Girls and Boys Clubs of America.

In 2003, Jon Secada purchased a home in Miami, Florida for $975,000. Fast forward to August 2021, he sold the property for a whopping $2.85 million.

But that’s not all, in 2019, Jon bought a dilapidated lot for $400,000 and turned it into a modern mansion. The 5,000 square-foot property was sold in August 2021 for $1.825 million.

His real estate ventures in Miami have certainly paid off as he continues to add to his already impressive net worth.
