Julio Iglesias was born on September 23, 1943, in Madrid, Spain, to a Galician medical doctor father and a mother of Jewish ancestry. He studied law at CEU San Pablo University in Madrid and played professional football as a goalkeeper for Real Madrid Castilla in the Segunda Division.

However, a serious car accident left him unable to walk for two years, and he discovered his musical talent while in recovery at the hospital. A nurse gave him a guitar to exercise his hands, and he learned to play it, leading to the start of his music career.

Iglesias then lived with Dutch model Miranda Rijnsburger, who is 22 years younger than him. They got married in August 2010 and have five children together: Miguel, Rodrigo, twins Cristina and Victoria, and Guillermo.
