Nick Ashford was a talented American R&B singer and songwriter, best known for his partnership with his wife Valerie Simpson. The duo formed Ashford & Simpson and released their debut album in 1973. They had several #1 hits on the US R&B and Dance charts, including “Solid” and “Stay Free”. They also wrote songs for other artists, such as Ray Charles’ #1 hit “Let’s Go Get Stoned”.
Ashford was born in Fairfield, South Carolina in May 1941 and passed away in August 2011 at the age of 70. He and Simpson met when he was homeless, and the two began writing songs together. They sold their first batch for only $64, but went on to become one of the most successful songwriting duos in music history.
Ashford & Simpson were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002, and Ashford also appeared in the film New Jack City in 1991. Despite his success, Ashford never forgot his humble beginnings and remained dedicated to his craft until his death.
