Nikita Dragun, also known as Mama Dragun and Nyc Dragun, is a famous American transgender makeup artist and beauty guru who has gained recognition online. 

She is a role model for young transgender people because of her openness about transitioning from male to female. 

Her YouTube channel has 3.55 million subscribers and features makeup tutorials, vlogs, challenges, and videos about her journey. 

She became aware of the gender biases faced by women during her transition, which inspired her to be an advocate for both the LGBT community and feminism. 

She also has a large following on Instagram, with 9 million fans, and on TikTok, with over 14 million fans.

Early life

Mama Dragun is an inspiring figure in the transgender community.

Born on January 31, 1996, in Springfield, Virginia, she is the daughter of a Vietnamese father and a Mexican mother. She has two sisters – Allegrah Nguyen Capri and Taliah Nguyen Marriott – plus a brother named Vincarlo Nguyen. 

Mama Dragun initially pursued singing as a male vocalist in school but has since rediscovered her voice after her transition. In 2014 she enrolled in a four-year course at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles. 

Adding to her signature style are two dragon tattoos on her chest and back and an Arabic script on her wrist meaning ‘dragon.’ She was also previously in a relationship with fashion designer Oscar Utierre, who she continues to collaborate with today.

Mama Dragun initially gained attention on Instagram, where she presented a carefully curated image. As a fan of YouTube, she decided to bring her image to the platform and start creating content. 

At first, she did not discuss her gender identity, thinking her followers would eventually figure it out. However, that was not the case, leading her to come out as transgender in a viral video, “I am transgender,” posted on December 28, 2015.

Her popularity on YouTube continued to grow, and she has also modeled for Jeffree Star Cosmetics. In September 2017, she launched her first brand collaboration, a line of three wigs named Saphira, Khaleesi, and Cassie, in partnership with Bellami Hair. 

In March 2019, she introduced Dragun Beauty, a makeup line specifically designed for the transgender community.

Nikita Dragun has also been featured in a docuseries on Snapchat called “Nikita Unfiltered,” which premiered on March 21, 2020. The series follows her journey as a transgender woman and her rise to fame.

Her transition story

Growing up, Mama Dragun showed a preference for dolls and dressing up. Her mother first noticed her being different when she lined up with the girls during a physical education class and insisted on wearing shorts with side cuts. 

By the age of eight, she had started saving money for her transition after watching a documentary about transgender individuals. By the end of high school, she was so androgynous that she was considered “at the absolute peak of being gay.” 

Initially, she thought she was gay due to the taboo surrounding LGBT issues, but she later realized she was a woman trapped in a man’s body.

After feeling uncomfortable using the men’s bathroom, she underwent a transition and was grateful for her parents’ support.

Growing up in Virginia, Mama Dragun had never met a transgender person. Still, after opening up on YouTube, she received helpful advice from people worldwide, which convinced her of the platform’s power. 

In mid-2015, as her popularity as a YouTuber grew, she moved to Los Angeles, where she became more comfortable with her transition after meeting more members of the LGBT community. 

She chose to be open about her journey on YouTube and help others by documenting it. In a video titled “Have I Gotten THE Surgery…,” posted on July 22, 2018, she shared her hormone replacement therapy, surgery to change her body, and even showed the removal of staples from her skull.
