They are remembered for setting remarkable standards for other artists to imitate and learn from. The current members of this Los Angeles band are:
- Anthony Kiedis
- Michael Peter Balzary (Flea)
- Chad Gaylord Smith (Chad Smith)
- John Anthony Frusciante (John Frusciante)
History / Formation
Red Hot Chili Peppers originated from Los Angeles in 1983 from a friendship of teenage boys in the Fairfax High School in their home district.
The founders of the band were lead vocalist Kiedis, former guitarist Hillel Slovak (Late), drummer Jack Steven Iron and bassist Michael Peter Balzary popularly known as Flea. The trio formed a band called Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem. They had their first performance as a band to a group of thirty-year-old customers of a club in Los Angeles.
Two of the founding members (Jack and Slovak) were in this group as a side-job since they were already engaged with another group known as What Is This? After What Is This? got signed to a major record deal at MCA, Jack and Slovak were motivated to quit playing with Kiedis.
The group moved on without them and soon changed their name to Red Hot Chili Peppers around the same time, while building their career by playing at many Los Angeles shows. They were managed by the notable Lindy David Goetz who signed a seven-album deal on their behalf with EMI America and Enigma Records. The remaining two founding members hired Cliff Martinez and Jack Morris Sherman as replacements.
In August 1984, the new line-up released their first self-titled album. After their album release, college radio stations and cable channels helped the group build their fan base by playing their songs regularly and it resulted in about 300,000 copies being sold.
Events transpired in the following year successfully despite few misunderstandings between Sherman and Kiedis.
Jack Sherman was fired in 1985 and former member Slovak rejoined the band. Their second album Freaky Styley was produced the same year by George Clinton which they released on the 16th August 1985.
Around this time, the band had been involved in the use of heavy heroin that cost them the original recording plan for their third album. Cliff Martinez was fired in April of 1986. Former member Jack Irons rejoined the group after Martinez left.
They released a third album The Uplift Mofo Party Plan in September 1987. It was very unfortunate yet not surprising when Hillel Slovak was reported dead on June 25, 1988 due to dangerous heroin abuse.
In Slovakâs stead, they recruited DeWayne McKnight but fired him soon after because he couldnât relate well with the team.
A fourth album was released on August 16, 1989 adding to the bandâs victories. They released another best-selling, award-winning album Blood Sugar Sex Magik which sold over 12 million copies. There had been a handful of new members by the 2000s.
There was a drift in the bandâs style with their 1995 album One Hot Minute which prompted a tour but failed drastically as a result of the band membersâ drug use which caused a lot of unwanted problems during their tour.
By 2005 they had released a ninth album, Stadium Arcadium with a fast selling single, Dani California.
In 2014, the band played with Grammy award winner Bruno Mars at the Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show watched by 115.3 million viewers.
