William Taylor
The Rehoboth Beach Missing Person case sparked a massive multi-agency multi-hour surf search off the Beach. What happened next?
Rehoboth Beach, a beloved vacation destination nestled along Delaware’s scenic shoreline, found itself shrouded in sorrow this past Sunday evening.
An unsettling incident unfolded as a man was reported missing amidst the gentle, rolling surf.
This distressing development swiftly triggered an extensive search and rescue operation.
Drawing upon the efforts of the Coast Guard, DNREC, the state police helicopter, Rehoboth Beach’s vigilant police force, and the dedicated volunteers from the fire company.
Pres. Biden: "I have seen no question of our credibility from our allies around the world."
Perhaps Rehoboth Beach is the "root cause" of missing global criticism.

Despite their valiant efforts, the elusive gentleman could not be located.
The identity of the missing individual has since been revealed as Richard A. Boateng, a 31-year-old resident hailing from Savage, Maryland.
A Witness Account of the Incident
According to a witness on the beach who identified himself as Mohan, the incident occurred about twenty-two minutes after lifeguards went off duty on Sunday.
He reported seeing a man in distress off Rehoboth Avenue and immediately alerted others around him. But despite their efforts to get help, the man disappeared beneath the waves.
“I thought somebody was waving his hand,” Mohan said.
“Probably he was shouting ‘help’ and we suddenly realized, yeah, he needs help. So then I started shouting ‘Help! We need a lifeguard.’
We were shouting, shouting, shouting, and finally when I turned to this side. I can’t see him. He just lifted his hand and he drowned.”
The Witness’s Account Coincides with Reports from Other Beachgoers
This account coincides with reports from other beachgoers who witnessed the incident.
They said that they saw a man in the water waving his hands and heard him shouting for help but were unable to reach him before he disappeared beneath the waves.
The incident happened just a short distance from the shore, which makes it even more tragic.
Off-duty Lifeguards and Coast Guard Conducted Multiple Searches for Boateng
After receiving about a dozen calls reporting a man in distress, the Rehoboth Beach 9-1-1 center immediately dispatched a team of off-duty Rehoboth Beach Patrol guards.
Who were assisted by other beach patrols, for several searches of the surf.
They conducted searches for hours, with several groups of a half-dozen or so guards clinging to a rope as they dragged it through the water parallel to the beach.
The search was ultimately unsuccessful.
They were later joined by other agencies, including the Coast Guard, DNREC, the state police helicopter, Rehoboth Beach police, and the volunteer fire company.
But they were not able to locate Boateng. It was an exhaustive search that lasted well into the night.
The Sussex County Lifesaving Association Performed Valiantly
Despite the operation’s lack of success, one participating guard noted that the Sussex County Lifesaving Association community came together Sunday night.
He added that they performed valiantly despite the circumstances.
The Search Continued Even in Darkness and With Parachute Flares
The search for Boateng continued even in complete darkness, using mostly Coast Guard vessels and a helicopter.
Crews also launched several parachute flares to light up the area in the hope of spotting him.
Nevertheless, their extensive search was unsuccessful, and the search was temporarily suspended. Boateng remains missing as of this writing.
Several Recent Incidents Highlight Importance of Beach Safety
Recent events have underscored the critical importance of beach safety, particularly during the bustling summer season.
Moreover, this summer has witnessed a series of incidents involving swimmers finding themselves in perilous situations while enjoying the ocean.
To illustrate, on July 15th, two swimmers were rescued from the clutches of a rip current at Rehoboth Beach.
Just six days later, another individual had to be rescued after being knocked down by a formidable wave and pulled beneath the waves at Broadkill Beach.
These occurrences serve as stark reminders of the necessity for caution when venturing into the ocean’s embrace.
This Tragic Incident Is Rehoboth Beach’s Only Drowning of the Season
As it stands, this unfortunate incident would mark Rehoboth Beach’s sole drowning case for the season.
Since the turn of the millennium, there have been a total of nine drownings recorded in Rehoboth Beach, with riptides accounting for one of them and various other factors contributing to the rest.
This year, there have been several near-drowning incidents, emphasizing the paramount importance of adhering to water safety guidelines.
Investigations and Continued Search Operations
The authorities are tirelessly pursuing their investigation and ongoing search efforts in the quest to locate Mr. Boateng’s remains.
Simultaneously, his family and friends find themselves grappling with profound grief, desperately holding onto hope for eventual closure.
This heart-wrenching tragedy carries a poignant message that resonates with all beachgoers:
the importance of exercising caution when entering the water and maintaining a vigilant awareness of potential dangers while enjoying the shoreline.
