In the early days of his legal career, he served as a judicial law clerk for federal judge G. Ross Anderson of the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina and for John P. Gardner on the South Carolina Court of Appeals.

Then he joined Nelson, Mullins, Riley & Scarborough to broaden his experience in private practice. He then went on to serve as the U.S. representative of South Carolina's fourth congressional district from 2011 to 2019.
