Vacant building burns in downtown Rome

Writer Rachel Young

An empty building and an addition in downtown Rome were completely destroyed by a fire Wednesday morning.

ROME, Ga. -- No one was hurt when a vacant building caught fire in downtown Rome Wednesday morning.

Rome Fire Chief Gordon Henderson said the blaze broke out at the Northwest Georgia Medical Clinic on North Fifth Avenue, a doctors' building that has been empty for several years.

The fire spread from the original building to an addition, which was also vacant, according to Henderson.

The building was completely destroyed. Henderson said officials will most likely tear down the heavily damaged addition.
