Who Is Margot Robbie's Husband Tom Ackerley?

Writer Matthew Cannon

Every Barbie needs a Ken — and Margot Robbie found hers in British filmmaker Tom Ackerley.

The couple first met in 2013 on the set of the World War II drama Suite Française, in which Robbie starred, and Ackerley served as an assistant director. They began dating the following year before quietly tying the knot in 2018. Despite constantly being in the spotlight, Robbie manages to keep her relationship behind the scenes. The pair rarely comments on their marriage and keeps their red-carpet appearances together to a minimum.

Recently, however, Ackerley joined Robbie on her international Barbie press tour and has been by her side during this year's award season, reviving fan interest in the Oscar-winner's mystery husband. Here's everything to know about Ackerley and his private marriage to Robbie.

What does Tom Ackerley do?

Ackerley is a filmmaker. After studying at Godalming College in the U.K., he began his career as a floor runner and a set production assistant before ultimately becoming a director and a producer. Over the years, Ackerley has worked on major films — including The Brothers Grimsby, Macbeth, and Promising Young Woman — and also co-founded his own production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, with Robbie in 2014.

How did Tom Ackerley get his start in film?

Fun fact: Ackerley's first film role was in front of the camera as an extra in the first three installments of the Harry Potter franchise. And Robbie couldn't be more proud.

"My husband is in the Harry Potter movies. I know I was like, 'Had you told me sooner, we would've been married very quickly,' " Robbie joked during a 2020 appearance on The Graham Norton Show. "But he was an extra when he was a little kid — he was one of the Slytherin extras when Draco pushes some kids out of the way to see Buckbeak in the third book. He pushes my husband out of the way."

Robbie and Ackerley first met in 2013 on the set of the film Suite Française, where he was working as an assistant director, and Margot starred alongside Michelle Williams and Ruth Wilson.

At the time, Robbie wasn't looking for a relationship, but eventually, Ackerley's charm and good looks won her over. "I was the ultimate single gal. The idea of relationships made me want to vomit," she previously told Vogue back in 2016. "And then this crept up on me. We were friends for so long. I was always in love with him, but I thought, Oh, he would never love me back. Don't make it weird, Margot. Don't be stupid and tell him that you like him."

She added, "And then it happened, and I was like, Of course we're together. This makes so much sense, the way nothing has ever made sense before."

They began dating in 2014 and were first photographed as a couple at a New York Rangers game.

How often do Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley work together?

Robbie and Ackerley's professional paths cross more often than you might think. The same year they started dating, they also decided to go into business together (along with Robbie's childhood friend Sophia Kerr and Ackerley's colleague Josey McNamara). They co-founded their own production company, LuckyChap Entertainment.

The company has become wildly successful and produced award-winning films, including I, Tonya, Promising Young Woman, and Barbie.

Robbie and Ackerley secretly tied the knot two years after they started dating in December 2016. Without announcing their engagement beforehand, they hosted a private ceremony in Australia's Byron Bay and revealed the news a few days later with a photo of Robbie's ring on Instagram.

Two years after they tied the knot, Robbie made a rare comment about her new role as a wife while speaking with Porter. “Being married is actually the most fun ever. Life got way more fun somehow. I have a responsibility being someone’s wife, I want to be better.”

Why did they postpone their honeymoon?

After getting married, Robbie and Ackerley went straight into filming I, Tonya, and delayed going on their honeymoon until the movie wrapped. "We did this film instead of our honeymoon. There were times we were sitting in a car parked in Atlanta, freezing cold, being like, 'We should be on a beach right now. We should be on a honeymoon. What are we doing?!'" she told Extra at the time, jokingly adding, "Following our dream."

Ultimately, Robbie and Ackerley took a trip to Tahiti, where they bumped into Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, as well as former president Barack Obama.

Where is Tom Ackerley from?

Ackerley was born in Surrey in southeast England and grew up several miles away in the town of Guildford, where, according to Robbie, there are no snakes "at all," adding to the filmmaker's fear of the reptiles.

"My husband hates snakes. He's English. You guys don't have them, obviously, at all in England, I guess," she told James Corden during an appearance on The Late Late Show. "I'm living in L.A., and there was a two-meter snake … just outside the kitchen, just in the garden the other day. [Ackerley] almost had a coronary. He was like, 'What do we do?! Do we kill it?!' And I was like, 'F— no, we don't kill it. Just gently tell it to go somewhere else.'"
