In August 2022, “Pitchfork” reported that Win Butler had been accused of sexual misconduct by four individuals. A representative for Butler admitted that he had sexual interactions with all four individuals, but claimed they were consensual and initiated by the other person. Butler’s crisis PR specialist released a statement on his behalf, acknowledging his struggle with mental health issues and childhood abuse, and the heavy depression he faced after a miscarriage in his 30s, but not intending to excuse his behavior.

One of the accusers, pseudonymously named Lily, alleged that Butler sexually assaulted them a few weeks after meeting at another band’s concert in 2015. A fifth accuser came forward a few months later, alleging an emotionally manipulative relationship with Butler for three years.
